The 2016 F1 World Championship opened on March 18 at the Albert Park Circuit. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) immediately logged the best time in the first free practice session.
It rained early in the morning at Alberta Park. All the machines were outfitted with rain tires as they continued to observe the situation in the early part of the session. Gradually, the situation at the track became better, so there were some drivers that had their machines outfitted with dry tires in the second half of the session. However, it rained once more; hence, the 90 minutes in the morning session were plagued with unstable weather conditions. Despite that, Hamilton, who was last year’s champion, showed great a performance as usual. Despite the fact that he couldn’t really show his speed during the test run, he was able to display his real abilities at the free practice run of the series. His fastest time was 1:29.725. The Red Bull team made a comeback with Daniil Kvyat and the Australian Daniel Ricciardo logging the second and third best times respectively.
The McLaren-Honda tag-team also had a decent start. Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button logged the seventh and eighth best times respectively. As previously mentioned, the weather was inconsistent, so the leaders refrained from driving all-out.
The second free practice session is scheduled from 14:30 to 16:00 JST. According to the forecast, the weather this weekend will be better; hence, it is expected that the best time will be updated.
