SBK Round 6: Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes captures first victory this season

The UK Round (Round 6) of the SBK Superbike Championship was held for three days from May 22 to 24 at Donington Park where Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes came out victorious in both races.

In Race 1, despite giving up the lead to teammate Jonathan Rea and Leon Haslam of Aprilia at the start, a heated battle resulted in the middle stages of the race after Sykes regained the lead. In the final stages, Sykes widened his lead on Rea and took home his first victory of the season. In Race 2, Sykes took control of the race from the outset, distancing himself from the pack and rode comfortably through to his second straight win.

This was the 24th victory for Tom Sykes who recorded his first double win in 11 rounds since he last accomplished this feat in the 2014 Misano race in Italy. He has now tied Carlos Checa for seventh place on the all-time wins list. Last season, Sykes became the first rider to achieve a double win at Donington Park in back-to-back seasons, and has now stretched that record to three consecutive years. In addition, his six victories at Donington Park have tied him with four-time world champion Carl Fogarty for most wins on that circuit.

On the other hand, Rea was able to maintain his overall lead by finishing second in both races. With Haslam who is in second place overall, finishing fourth in both races, the gap between first and second has been widened from 87 to 101 points. As a result, Rea has moved one step closer to capturing his long-awaited championship.
