WCOTY announces first round selections for World Green Car 2017

On September 29, the sponsoring organization for World Car of the Year (WCOTY) announced its first round of selections for the World Green Car 2017 at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.

The World Green Car, an award category for the WCOTY, is awarded to the vehicle with the best environmental performance from a list of new models that debuted between fall 2015 and fall 2016.

To qualify, each vehicle must continue to be produced and sold till spring 2017 and be available in at least two continents around the world. In other words, vehicles that are exclusively for the European, North American, Japanese or any other specific market do not qualify for selection. The selections will be voted on by a group of around 70 journalists from over 20 countries along with five experts on environmental technology.

The 11 vehicles nominated for the first round of selections of the World Green Car 2017 are as follows:

Audi Q7 e-tron 3.0 TDI Quattro
BMW 740e i Performance
Chevrolet Bolt
Chevrolet Malibu
Honda Clarity Fuel Cell
Hyundai Ioniq
Kia Niro Hybrid
Mercedes GLC 350e
Tesla Model X
Toyota RAV4
Toyota Prius Prime(Prius PHV)

The all-new Prius Prime (Prius PHV) and the RAV4 were among the selections as Toyota showcases its environmental performance with different powertrains, a plug-in hybrid and a hybrid system.

For Honda, their all-new Clarity Fuel Cell was nominated. Germany’s three brands, Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz each had a PHV make the list.

The World Green Car 2017 will be announced at the 2017 New York International Auto Show to be held in April 2017. Last year’s award went to the Toyota Mirai FCV.
