Toyota’s rugged and spacious Tj Cruiser to be launched in Tokyo

Toyota Motor Corporation will introduce its Tj Cruiser new genre crossover concept at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show 2017 to be held from October 25 to November 5 (general admission from October 28) at Tokyo Big Sight.

The Tj Cruiser combines the spaciousness of a minivan with the powerful design of an SUV. The name “Tj Cruiser” is derived from the letter “T” for “Toolbox” (as in the vehicle functions like a toolbox), the letter “j” for “joy” (as in the fun and enjoyment of cruising to various places), and the word “Cruiser” which has a long tradition within Toyota’s lineup of SUVs and describes its power.

The Tj Cruiser features a square-shaped cabin, which offers exceptional convenience similar to that of a minivan. It also offers a powerful suspension, made possible by its large-diameter SUV-like tires, as well as a vigorously looking front end. The bonnet, roof and fenders are coated with special material to resist scratches and stains even through contact with objects.

As for its interior, the front (passenger’s side) and rear seating can be completely folded down into long deck boards for loading long items of up to around 3 meters in length such as surfboards and bicycles. The Tj Cruiser comes with lashing straps on the backside of the seating as well as on the deck boards for easy tie-downs of small baggage and long objects. To create even more space to place groceries and other shopping items, the seat cushion behind the driver’s seat can be folded forward. Moreover, its large rear and sliding doors accommodate the loading and unloading of large items.

The exterior measures at 4,300 x 1,775 x 1,620mm (length x width x height). The Tj Cruiser is likely to feature Toyota’s next-generation TNGA platform, a 2.0-liter class engine and hybrid system, as well as front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive systems.
