New Audi A8 to debut in July with level 3 autonomous driving

Audi has decided on the date for the debut of the next-generation model of its A8 luxury saloon.

Audi revealed this at its annual press conference in mid-March. Audi President Rupert Stadler said, “We will unveil the new A8 at the Audi Summit in Barcelona on July 11.”

The current A8 made its debut in December, 2009. It uses the same Audi Space Frame (ASF) all-aluminum body that the original A8 has used for the last 15 years. It features further evolution of the high-tension aluminum that was introduced with the current model, making it approximately 40% lighter than a car with a regular steel body.

One of the highlights of the new A8 is that it’s Audi’s first mass market model with autonomous driving technology. Audi says, “The new A8 uses level 3 autonomous driving.” It says that the driver can entrust the car with its operation in traffic or under-60km/h driving conditions.
