On April 21 in Detroit, Michigan, Honda Motor Company announced, “The upcoming Clarity Fuel Cell will be joined by two additional variants, the Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid, launching in the US in 2017.â€
The Clarity Fuel Cell made its world premiere at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show last October. It was launched as an exceptionally practical fuel cell vehicle (FCV) that seats up to five passengers. It became the first mass-produced FCV in the world to feature a fuel cell stack and powertrain system under the front hood, thereby offering more space inside the cabin.
This layout allows for other electric powertrains to be easily installed. As a result, a motor only electric powertrain as well as a plug-in hybrid powertrain with an engine and motor will be featured on same body as the Clarity Fuel Cell.
For the US market, the Clarity Fuel Cell is scheduled for release this fall. This will be followed by releases of the Clarity Electric sometime in 2017 and the Clarity Plug-in Hybrid in late 2017. American Honda’s Executive Vice President, John Mendel said, “The Honda Clarity Series will provide customers with a well-equipped, premium, midsize vehicle with range of ultra low-carbon powertrain options to suit their lifestyle needs.â€
