On March 24, Toyota Motor Sales USA announced that it would begin its campaign to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the debut of the Corolla at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.

The first Corolla was released in Japan in November 1966. It came to the US in 1968. In the 50 years since its release, global sales have been over 43,000,000 units.

Currently, Toyota sells about 1,500,000 Corollas per year. It is produced at 16 plants worldwide including the United States and Canada.

Toyota announced that it would kick off the campaign at this year’s New York International Auto Show. It plans to release a limited edition 50th anniversary model and tour a fully restored 1970 Corolla across the USA.

The Corolla that was first introduced in 1968 and the legendary AE86 will appear at the show. Toyota Motor Sales USA says, “Toyota today launched the Corolla 50th Anniversary campaign – a year-long effort showcasing how the Corolla has powered more memories, milestones and moments than any car in the world.”
