Organizers of the World Car of the Year awards (WCOTY) awarded the new Mazda MX-5 “World Car Design of the Year” at the 2016 New York International Auto Show.
“World Car Design of the Year” is one of the WCOTY’s categories. For the category, it chose one model for its outstanding design. The model must have been introduced from fall 2014 to fall 2015.
One condition is that the model has to be sold in at least one market in the world by 2016. The judges are 74 journalists from 23 countries along with five design experts.
The 2016 winner was the new Mazda MX-5. The Mazda CX-3 and Jaguar’s next-generation sport sedan, the Jaguar XE, were both finalists.
Mazda Design Division General Manager Ikuo Maeda commented, “We’d like to give our deep thanks for this award. This is proof that Mazda’s design connects people throughout the world.”
