Mazda Demio XD Touring

Mazda Demio XD Touring Review: “Has better output with improvements on specific parts” by Yoichi Moroboshi

The Mazda Demio, which was unveiled in September 2014, had a minor update after a year and three months.

In order to improve its initialization, the diesel version of the Demio was revamped with turbocharging control and engine control. This improvement can be beneficial during departure, after stopping upon the traffic signal’s command. If you want to yield comfortable torque of a diesel-powered vehicle, it’s best to step on the accelerator pedal slowly. Its acceleration feel remains the same as before. And if you’re in a hurry and you want to drive faster, you can just quickly step on the accelerator. It would then immediately release torque, allowing the car move at once. Many drivers in Japan are particular about ‘starting’ the car, so this improvement may be the response to this concern.

Moreover, the Natural Sound Smoother, which is an optional equipment in one grade of the CX-3, will be added to all diesel cars of Demio as a standard equipment. The Natural Sound Smoother is mounted inside the engine and it has been equipped in order to negate the peculiar sounds and vibrations in the diesel version. This equipment’s size may be small, but the cost of manual labor of installing it is expensive. When equipped with the Natural Sound Smoother, you can feel that its engine moves smoothly as it clearly eliminates vibrations. A smooth engine rotation not only provides comfort and ride quality, but it also has a big impact on the durability of the car. If the particular vibrations would constantly be transmitted to the car frame, it would not be unusual for this to somehow have an effect.

Moreover, its electric power steering (EPS) has also been changed. It has already provided firm assistance since the early days of this model; thus an even more stable one is anticipated. The customers might like this setting, but I personally don’t think that the previous setting was bad either. In the early days, its feeling of heaviness provided a sense of security, which gives it tolerance despite road gaps and undulations. I don’t think that this was lost given the minor updates, but I think that the previous generation model gave off a more Mazda-esque feeling.

Owners of the previous generation model might feel frustrated that the updated model was added with seat heaters. Unlike the air conditioning heater that cannot be used while the engine is warm, seat heaters that immediately makes the space warm is a very pleasing equipment to use during winter season. Moreover, it already adopts a shark’s fin antenna and flat-type wipers. Despite being minor parts, they have an effect on its styling. For wipers, the flat types costs higher when changing blades, so its running cost is now a little bit higher as well.
