On September 28, the 10 cars chosen from the second round of selections for the 2016 North American Car of the Year were announced.
The North American Car of the Year Awards is being held for the 23rd time this year. A group of around 50 journalists from the US and Canada select the best car from a list of new vehicles that were released within the last year or is scheduled to be released in North America. To qualify, each car must have sold at least 5,000 units annually. Supercars and some luxury models are excluded from qualification.
The short list of the 10 best passenger cars for the 2016 North American Car of the Year is as follows.
BMW 7 Series
Mazda MX-5 Miata
Chevrolet was the top automaker as the General Motors brand had three cars on the list including the sporty Camaro, mid-size Malibu sedan, and the Volt plug-in hybrid.
As for domestic cars, new models from the four Japanese automakers made the list including the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic, Mazda MX-5 (Roadster) and the Nissan Maxima.
This list will be trimmed down to three finalists in December and the 2016 North American Car of the Year will be announced at the 2016 North American International Auto Show next January in Detroit, USA.
