Mazda Roadster Review: “Once you drive it, it instantly becomes yours” by Tomohiko Tsutsumi

The 6th generation New Roadster has a fascinating appearance. Its wheelbase is 20mm shorter than the previous model, and it basically became a compact car. However, its overall width is 15mm wider so it also has a sense of stability. Its glamorous body is very sexy.

Its instrument panel was made stylish. In the prototype, only the center tachometer ring was made silver, but in this model, all three tachometers are uniform in color, making it look undoubtedly rich. When I sat on the cockpit, my back, waist and hips perfectly fit in; it was comfortable and I felt united with the vehicle. It has a high sense of security. It is one of the great seats I’ve tried. It also has a great forward visibility. You don’t feel uneasy while viewing the front and side areas, and when you start driving, the car becomes yours.

It has a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed AT with paddle shift, and its MT has a fine operability with its somewhat short shift lever.

It has a comfortable engine. It has a 16 valve 1.5L DOHC engine and it generates a maximum output of 96kw (131ps) / 7,000rpm with 13 compression ratio. It has a light acceleration of 0-400m. There is almost no inferiority between its power performance and the performance of the previous generation with 2L engine. After all, its 110kg lighter weight is more effective, as compared to the previous model. Its engine sound is pleasant and it resounds comfortably.

It has an admirable handling. Its power steering is very amazing. It is natural and it does not seem to have any bad points. It is very smooth. It is not so heavy; it doesn’t make you feel tired. You can also apply counter steering in this model and it makes you feel confident, so it has a high sense of security. It has a moderate controllability and a great response. In short, if you want to gracefully turn it without being too sensitive, it cuts smoothly as you wish. It is the result of a low center of gravity. Its torsional rigidity lowers when you open it, and although it has a tendency of having a sharp response, this is perfect to use in winding roads.

Astonishingly, its soft top (roof) is also easy to open and close. You can also open it in one touch using your one hand while you’re on your seat. It is phenomenal! Moreover, the roundness of its roof stands out with its aluminum material. It looks stunning.

It is pleasantly comfortable. Its riding feel is refined and it is convenient as a sports car. It may sometimes make your driving difficult, but the car does not give you a bumpy ride. Instead, it rolls gently when cornering.

It is a very stylish compact sports car. It is also practical as you can load baggages in its rear trunk. Its interior comfort and handling are both highly excellent.
