Toyota displayed the Scion iA, the entry sedan for its Scion brand for young drivers, at the 2015 New York Motor Show on April 1. It was displayed with exclusive strategic pricing.
The iA is the Scion brand’s first sedan. Until now, its lineup has featured compact hatchbacks and 2-door coupes. By introducing a 4-door sedan, the brand is aiming at a new customer demographic. According to Scion, the updated version continues to place emphasis on functionality while also presenting a sedan for young drivers that’s stylish and fun to drive.
The iA is based on the new Demio Sedan, which the Mazda introduced mainly in Southeast Asia. Its specialized design for areas like the grille, bumper, and headlights give it a Scion-like feel. The engine is a 1.5L in-line 4-cylinder gasoline engine made by Mazda that puts out 106hp. Six-speed MT and 6-speed AT is available.
Scion announced the price of the iA at a 2015 New York Motor Show press conference. The estimated base price, it said, would be $16,000 (about 1,920,000 yen). This is a relatively low price considering that it comes with features like a low-speed collision avoidance system using laser and camera, a 7-inch multimedia system with speech recognition, rear camera, and 16-inch aluminum wheels.
