Scion iA

2015 New York Auto Show: Was Scion’s first sedan, the iA, based on Mazda Demio?

Toyota will debut the new model of Scion, the iA, a popular brand for North American youth, at the 2015 New York Auto Show this coming April. There is a possibility that its base vehicle is the Mazda Demio.

This theory started when the previous image of the concept iA was distributed by Scion. The Scion iA is the brand’s first sedan car. However, we can tell that from the location of the fender line in the hood and the cut line in the hood’s tip section, it shares a great similarity with the new Mazda 2 (Japanese name: Demio).

In addition, Toyota and Mazda announced that they had an agreement about production in Mexico on November 2012. They officially announced that from summer of 2015, Toyota will be producing about 50,000 units annually of the compact car that was based on the New Mazda 2 (Demio) at the new factory ran by Mazda in Mexico since February 2014.

It seems that they were referring to the Scion iA that will debut on the 2015 New York Auto Show. The Scion iA sedan seems to be based on the New Mazda 2 (Demio), which was debuted by Mazda at the 2014 Thailand International Motor Expo. There is also a rumor that it will also be equipped with a SkyActiv engine.

If you compare the image of the Scion iA and the new Mazda Demio sedan, while many say it is based on the Demio, its grills and bumpers have unique designs;you will see that it expresses its own identity as a Scion vehicle.
