On December 7, Subaru of America announced that the 2018 Legacy Outback, Legacy B4, Impreza and WRX were awarded the 2018 Top Safety Pick+, the highest safety rating, by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the U.S.
Previously, the IIHS’ crashworthiness test involved a small overlap crash test whereby the vehicle exceeds the centerline and a quarter of its left front (driver’s side) crashes into a barrier at a speed of 64km/h.
However, for this year’s test, the small overlap front crash test was expanded to include an additional test for the passenger’s side. This was added to examine the impact of the vehicle colliding into trees and utility poles.
The passenger-side small overlap front test involves a quarter of the right front (passenger’s side) of the vehicle crashing into a barrier at 64km/h. In order to be awarded the 2018 Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must earn a ‘good’ or ‘acceptable’ rating in this testing.
All four Subaru models received a ‘good’ rating for the passenger-side small overlap front. Combined with the results of its other tests, Subaru was awarded the highest honor for safety for these four vehicles.
