On December 7, Toyota Motor Corporation announced that 11 Toyota and Lexus models were awarded the 2018 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the U.S.
The 11 models selected were the Prius, Prius PHV, Corolla, RAV4, Avalon, Highlander and the Camry for the Toyota brand as well as the RX, NX, IS and ES for Lexus.
To qualify for the 2018 Top Safety Pick, each vehicle must earn good (the highest) ratings for crashworthiness testing which includes driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint & seats, as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good rating for headlights under crash avoidance & mitigation.
Of the 11 models selected, the Camry was the only model chosen for the 2018 Top Safety Pick+. To qualify for the 2018 Top Safety Pick+, each vehicle must earn the same ratings for Top Safety Pick along with an acceptable or good rating for passenger-side small overlap front and a good rating for child seat anchors (latch).
According to Toyota, the 11 models selected were the most out of any automaker operating in the U.S.
