On January 13, Toyota expanded its Japan recall for the Lexus IS and LFA over defective Takata airbags to the United States.
The recall is over a defect in the passenger side dual-stage expansion airbag’s inflator. There is a risk that the gas forming agent used in the airbags may degrade due to repeated changes in temperature and air moisture because of improper moisture protection. As a result, the airbag may rupture when deployed.
In Japan, the recall applies to the Lexus IS250, IS250C, IS350, IS350C, IS F and LFA. It applies to a total of 2244 cars built between November 12, 2010, and December 26, 2012.
On January 13, Toyota Motor Sales USA issued the same recall in the US. In addition to the six models in the Japanese recall, it also includes other models such as the 2009-2012 Corolla, 2007-2009 and 2012 Yaris (Vitz in Japan), and 2007-2009 and 2012 Lexus ES. The total number of cars affected is 543,000.
Toyota Motor Sales USA is contacting affected customers and will exchange airbag systems and inflators at dealerships.
