IIHS Crash Safety: Four Lexus models awarded highest safety rating in the U.S.

On December 8, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. (TMS) announced that four of its Lexus models were awarded the 2017 Top Safety Pick+, the highest rating awarded by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the U.S.

The four models selected for this honor are the NX and RX for the midsize luxury SUV category, the RC for the large luxury car category, and the ES for the midsize luxury car category. All four vehicles are equipped with crash prevention safety features such as automatic brakes.

To be awarded IIHS’ Top Safety Pick, each vehicle must receive a “good” rating―the highest rating―in all categories of crashworthiness testing, which consists of small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints & seats. Moreover, the Top Safety Pick is also awarded to vehicles that receive a “basic” rating for crash avoidance and mitigation.

To qualify for the even higher Top Safety Pick+ award, each vehicle must earn a good rating for the aforementioned categories in addition to receiving an “advanced”―the second best rating―or a “superior” rating for crash avoidance and mitigation. Moreover, from 2016, the IIHS has begun evaluating headlights and either a “good” or “acceptable” rating is required for the Top Safety Pick+.

Upon receiving IIHS’ highest honor, TMS said, “Nine of our models have been awarded the Top Safety Pick+ including five from the Toyota brand. This is the most out of any automaker in the U.S.”
