The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that Mitsubishi has expanded its late-November recall of the Outlander Sports in Japan to the United States.
The recall is over a defect in the rear gate’s gas springs. There is a risk of the external cylinder of the rear gate’s gas springs corroding due to improper coating on their end cap portion.
It use continues and corrosion gets worse, the protruding end caps of the external cylinders could break. In a worst case scenario, the cylinders could rupture when the rear gate is opened and this could cause injury to those standing nearby.
The recall applies to 50,288 2011 and 2012 model Outlander Sports models that were sold in the United States.
Mitsubishi Motors North America is contacting affected owners and will exchange gas springs at dealerships.
