Mazda recalls over 40,000 units of Mazda 6 for defective airbags

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US announced that a recall has been conducted on the Mazda 6 (the Atenza, in Japan) by Mazda North American Operations.

This recall pertains to a defective airbag on 41,918 units of the 2009-2010 models of the Mazda 6 sold in the US. According to NHTSA, as the protective coating of the airbag control unit was improperly applied, moisture can seep in and damage the unit. There are concerns that the airbag may not deploy in case of an accident.

Mazda will be contacting the owners of these vehicles and the airbag control units will be replaced at its dealerships.
