Toyota’s long-awaited mass-market FCV the Mirai will serve as a pace car in US motorsports races.
Toyota revealed this bit of news on April 23, saying, “The Mirai will pace the NASCAR Spring Cup Series in the United States on April 25.”
The Mirai is equipped with the Toyota Fuel Cell System (TFCS), which combines fuel cell technology that uses the company’s proprietary FC Stack and high-pressure oxygen tanks. Refueling takes about 3 minutes and it can run a maximum of about 650km.
The US Mirai can accelerate from 0 to 96km in 9 seconds and can reach a maximum speed of 178.6km/h. This puts it on par with the US Prius, which goes from 0 to 96km/h in 9.8 seconds and can reach 180km/h.
The Mirai is set for sale and lease in the US starting fall 2015 in California. It appears that the model is pacing the NASCAR Spring Cup Series to stir up interest.
