On April 12, the all-new Toyota Prius PHV was named the 2017 World Green Car at the 2017 New York International Auto Show.
The World Green Car is one of the award categories for the World Car of the Year (WCOTY). This year’s winner, the vehicle with the finest environmental performance, was selected from a list of new models that debuted between the fall of 2015 and the fall of 2016.
To qualify, each vehicle must continue to be produced and sold until spring 2017, and be available for purchase within at least two continents. Therefore, vehicles that are exclusive to the European, North American and Japanese markets do not qualify. A panel consisting of 75 journalists from 23 countries was given the authority to select the most exceptional environmental technology for 2017.
The new Toyota Prius PHV edged out a couple of electric vehicles, the Chevrolet Volt EV and the Tesla Model X, to take home the 2017 World Green Car award.
Toyota Motor North America’s Group Vice President and General Manager, Jack Hollis said, “This award is a tremendous achievement for the all-new Prius PHV.”
