In early January, Toyota Motor Europe released its sales figures for 2016. Total sales were 928,488 units. This is up 6.2% from the previous year and marks the first year-on-year growth in 2 years.
To break it down by brand, Toyota brand sales were up 5.4% at 854,172 units, showing the first growth in 2 years. Lexus sales were up 16.5% at 74,316 units.
For the Toyota brand, the Auris sold 144,052 units. This is up 1.2% from last year. The Auris Touring Sport wagon, which is not available in Japan, supported the favorable sales.
The Yaris (Vitz in Japan), which is Toyota’s flagship compact, also sold well. Its 2016 sales totaled 208,606 units, which is up 3.6% from the previous year.
For SUVs, the RAV4 made a recovery. Its 2016 sales totaled 110,120 units, up 28% from the previous year and marking the first growth in 2 years. This is also the first time in 2 years that it has surpassed 100,000 units. The new C-HR sold 10,679 units in 2016.
In mid-2014, Toyota released a new version of the Aygo entry model compact car in Europe. It sold 88,583 units in 2016, which is 0.3% down from the previous year.
