On November 7, the 10 nominees for the 2016-2017 Japan Car of the Year (JCOTY) were announced. The “10 best cars†were selected by the JCOTY executive committee, from a list of 35 domestic and import models.
To qualify, these passenger cars must have been launched or released between October 1, 2015 and October 31, 2016, and have an annual sales target of at least 500 units. The 10 best cars are nominated through evaluations and votes conducted over the course of a year by 59 members of the JCOTY executive committee including automotive journalists.
With 35 cars up for nomination this year, the list was fewer than last year, which had 45. Of the 35 qualified vehicles, nine were domestic models and 26 were imports (compared with last year’s 24 domestic and 21 imports).
