On October 3, Mitsubishi Motors published its September US new car sales figures. Total sales were 7,191 units. This is 4.8% down year-on-year and marks the 2nd month of decline.
Of the total, passenger cars were up 9.3% at 2,696 units, marking the first year-on-year growth in 5 months. Light trucks and SUVs were down 11.7% at 4,495 units, marking the 2nd month of decline.
For SUVs, the discontinued flagship model Outlander Sport (RVR in Japan) sold 2,570 units, which is down 18.2% from the previous year and marks the 2nd month of decrease. The Outlander Sport’s production was moved to Mitsubishi’s Illinois plant in the United States to meet growing demand, but it has decided to quit local production.
A new and improved Outlander sold 1,925 units in September. This is 1.3% down from the previous year and marks the 2nd month of decline. The Mirage, which was released in September, 2013, in the US, sold 1,756 units. This is up 30.3% and marks the first growth in 5 months.
Mitsubishi’s US sales for 2015 were up 22.8% at 95,342 units, which were the highest sales since 2008. Sales for January to September 2016 were up 1.5% at 74,351 units.
