On September 1, Suzukiâ€™s Indian subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki announced its sales results for August 2016. According to these results, overall sales including exports grew 12.2% year on year, to 132,211 units, resulting in a surplus for the second straight month.
The 132,211 units of total sales consisted of 119,931 units in domestic sales in India. This was a sales growth for the second straight month, rising 12.3% from the previous year. Exports grew 10.8% yoy, to 12,280 units, as it also increased for the second month in a row.
The leading A segment comprising models such as the Alto, Wagon R, Celerio (the Splash, in Japan), Swift (the Dzire) and Ritz (the Baleno), climbed for the second straight month, rising 4.4% yoy, to 90,269 units.
The van segment, which includes the Omni and Eeco, recorded 12,831 units as it rose 2.7% yoy and achieved a surplus for the second consecutive month. The utility vehicle segment such as SUVs and minivans including the Ertiga and S-Cross increased by a significant 114.5% yoy, to 16,806 units, as it recorded a surplus for the 16th month in a row. This was due in part to the introduction of the all-new Vitara Brezza sport utility vehicle.
In fiscal 2015 (April 2015 to March 2016), Maruti Suzukiâ€™s sales (including exports) increased 10.6% yoy, to record-high 1,429,248 units, resulting in a surplus for the second consecutive month.
