On August 22, Toyota Motor Corporation began production of the RAV4 at its St. Petersburg plant in Russia.
The RAV4 is Toyotaâ€™s leading model for Russiaâ€™s highly popular SUV segment. Toyota established its local production in Russia with expectations of continuously high demand in the market and to provide faster deliveries to its customers.
For its production of the RAV4, Toyota invested approximately 14.8 billion yen for the expansion of the St. Petersburg plant and upgrades to its equipment and facilities, as well as further automation of its assembly lines and press processing.
With production commencing for the RAV4, the production capacity of this plant has expanded from around 50,000 units to as much as 100,000 units per year. The expansion is also expected to generate approximately 800 new jobs as well.
Since 2007, Toyota has been producing its Camry at the St. Petersburg plant. As the second model assembled at this plant, the RAV4 will not only be sold in Russia, but will also be exported to Kazakhstan and Belarus just like the Camry.
