In late July, Mitsubishi Motors North America released its June US new car sales. Total sales were 8,023 units, which is up 0.8% year-on-year and marks the first growth in 2 months.
Of the 8,023 units, passenger cars were down 12.7% at 2,573 units, marking the 2nd month of decline. The light truck category which includes SUVs saw 8.7% growth at 5,450 units, marking the 24th straight month of growth.
For SUVs, the flagship Outlander Sport (RVR in Japan) took a downturn. Sales stopped short at 3,459 units in June. This is down 12.4% year-on-year and marks the 4th month of decline. In July 2012, Outlander Sport production was moved to Illinois in response to a spike in demand, but Mitsubishi has decided to withdrawal its US production.
On the other hand, the newly improved Outlander saw 1,991 units sold in June. This represents 86.4% growth and marks the 16th straight month of growth. This June saw the highest sales for the month of June since 2007. The Mirage, which was introduced in September 2013, sold 1,541 units. This is down 7.7% from the previous year and marks the 2nd month of decline.
Mitsubishi’s US new car sales for 2015 were up 22.8% at 95,342 units, setting a new record for yearly sales since 2008. Sales for the first half of 2016 (January to June) were up 4.8% at 1,934 units.
