Mazda 3 becomes Mazda’s fastest model ever to reach 5 million units

Mazda Motor Corporation announced that its global production of the Mazda 3 (the Axela) has reached the five-million unit mark as of April 30, 2016.

It accompanies the Familia as Mazda’s second model ever to reach this milestone, achieving the feat in a record time of 12 years and 10 months after its production began back in June 2003.

The Mazda 3 is the automaker’s top-of-the-line model, accumulating nearly 30% of Mazda’s annual sales. Along with its Hofu plant (Hofu, Yamaguchi), the Mazda 3 is produced at Changan Mazda Automobile (China), AutoAlliance (Thailand) and Mazda de Mexico Vehicle Operation (Mexico), and is also locally assembled in Malaysia and Vietnam.

The current Mazda 3 represents a new generation and was established with Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology and Kodo – Soul of Motion design theme throughout the vehicle when it underwent a major overhaul in 2013. In addition to receiving the Red Dot Design award in 2014, the Mazda 3 has been highly rated, being selected as one of the top three finalists for the World Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year awards.
