On March 14, Toyota Motor Europe announced that from this August, it will start production of the RAV4 at their St. Petersburg plant in Russia.
The RAV4 is Toyota’s leading model for Russia’s highly popular SUV segment. The decision to commence production at St. Petersburg is in hopes of greater demand for Toyota automobiles within the Russian market and to deliver them to its customers as quickly as possible.
In preparation for its local production of the RAV4, Toyota has enlarged its manufacturing shops, expanded the production lines, installed new equipment, including automation of body welding line and installation of equipment to increase automation in assembly and stamping shops.
The local production in St. Petersburg will expand the plant’s production capacity from 50,000 to as many as 100,000 cars per year. It will also create around 800 new jobs.
Toyota has been producing its Camry at the St. Petersburg plant since 2007. The RAV4 is the second model to be produced at the plant and is Toyota’s ninth model to be locally produced in all of Europe.
