On November 6, the top 10 vehicles nominated for the 2015-2016 Japan Car of the Year were announced. A committee of judges from the organization selected the 10 best automobiles from a list of 45 models consisted of domestic and import brands. The final selection and announcement will take place on December 7.
To qualify for nomination, these passenger cars must have been launched or released between the period of October 1, 2014 and October 31, 2015 with expected annual sales of at least 500 units. The selection committee consists of 60 representatives including motor journalists who examine and vote to determine the best car for that year.
The top 10 cars are as follows (in no particular order):
Suzuki Alto/Alto Turbo RS/Alto Lapin
BMW 2 Series Active Tourer/Gran Tourer
Tesla Model S P85D
Nissan X-Trail Hybrid
Subaru Legacy Outback/Legacy B4
The list features a couple of convertibles representing Mazda and Honda. Amongst imports, Tesla has made the final selection in its first year of qualification. Also worth noting is Jaguar’s contention with their prestigious XE.
Last year’s winner of the Japan Car of the Year award was the Mazda Demio. Will Mazda repeat or will an import take over the reigns for the first time in two years? We’ll wait and see how it unfolds on December 7.
