On June 16, Toyota Motor Sales USA announced that it was expanding its recall of cars equipped with passenger-side Takata airbags due to an inflator defect.
This recall is in response to new information from Takata and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding the inflator defect.
New models that have been added to the recall include 2003-2007 model Corollas (including the Matrix), 2005-2006 model Tundras, 2005-2007 model Sequoias, and 2003-2007 model Lexus SC430s.
All of these models taken together total 1,365,000 new cars added to the recall. The added models bring the total up to 2,915,000 cars recalled in the United States for Toyota and Lexus over the Takata airbag inflator defect.
Toyota Motor North America Chief Quality Officer Dino Triantafyllos said, “We will continue to respond promptly to new developments so we can resolve issues for them as quickly and safely as possible.”
